Mattel and TOKYOPOP inked a deal to develop original manga-style graphic novels for kids ages 8–12, featuring the globally beloved Barbie and Hot Wheels brands.
Set to debut in 2026, the first releases will include a western-inspired manga series based on Hot Wheels and new stories featuring Barbie characters. The graphic novels will showcase fresh artwork and original narratives designed to engage a new generation of fans.

“Hot Wheels and Barbie have long been symbols of storytelling, creativity, and inspiration, engaging audiences across generations,” says Ryan Ferguson, Global Head of Publishing at Mattel.
“Hot Wheels and Barbie are two of the world’s most adored toy and entertainment brands, and we are excited to partner with Mattel to develop and publish new original manga-style graphic novels,” comments Marc Visnick, TOKYOPOP COO and Publisher. “Adding Barbie and Hot Wheels to our roster brings an exciting dimension, and we look forward to sharing these legendary brands and bold new adventures with our global audience.”
This collaboration builds on Mattel’s recent publishing efforts, including the launch of its own imprint in 2024, with Simon & Schuster as its distribution partner. Hot Wheels and Barbie continue to lead the industry as symbols of creativity, empowerment, and innovation.
