Exhibit Profile

The Moscow Zoo is the first zoo in Russia. It was opened on February 12 (new style), 1864 at Presnensky Ponds.

Today, the zoo remains a modern environmental and educational center that teaches us to take care of the world around us. Our mission is to preserve the diversity of species and ensure a high level of animal welfare.

This year, the Moscow Zoo set a World record for the number of animal species represented - 1,253 species, of which more than half are rare, listed in the international and Russian Red Books.

The Moscow Zoo participates in a number of conservation programs. Among them are the conservation of the Amur tiger, the great panda, the Far Eastern leopard, the Russian muskrat, the curly pelican, the polar bear and many others.
